Sprint grade is giving Etios a sharper look

4 April 2017, 8:55 am

Toyota has modified their Etios range in South Africa and the big news is that the arrival of the latest grade is called ‘Sprint’. You could basically call this a facelift as it is only applying to one model that’s replacing the previous mid range ‘Xs’ model as well as sporting a redesigned front end. The ‘Xi’ base model is continuing with the same drooping face as before except that in place of the black grille it is getting the previous Xs editions color coding as well as upper chrome garnishes.

Although the Sprint name might imply a performance upgrade of sorts, it is entirely cosmetic enhancement. Underneath the bonnet you will find the same 66kW/132Nm and the normal aspirated 1.5 liter petrol unit that the Etios has always had and experience is telling us that it’s a perfectly decent motor at this price point.

The Sprint’s special frontal design is clearly inspired by more modern Toyotas like the newest Auris and even though the headlights is keeping their familiar contours, the rest of the bumper grille treatment is all new along with the upper air intake that is getting a wing like design and the lower intakes are significantly increasing in size.

Whereas the Xs has to make do with the covered steel wheels, the Sprint is riding on new twin spoke 15” alloys. The newcomer is also getting a fresh back bumper design along with a lower crease that is running into the number plate recess. Not much is changing inside in the latest Etios range, although Toyota is claiming that they have improved the trim surfaces.

As for the normal kit, the base Xi is coming with a four speaker audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning, height adjustable steering wheel, ABS brakes and dual airbags. In addition to all the visual extras that’s already been mentioned, the Sprint is adding electric windows, a height adjustable driver’s seat and central locking. The Etios Cross has all that also and is staying unchanged with its special crossover styling elements.

Pricing for the Etios Hatch is from R163 900 – R194 300 and the Etios Sedan is from R172 200 – R180 500. A two-year/30 000km service plan is also part of the deal throughout the Etios range.
